The nonprofit Go Safe Labs has identified the 10 most car accident-prone cities in the U.S. Minnesota residents won’t be surprised to hear that Los Angeles is on the list with 19,660 accidents occurring in 2019. The city with the highest number of accidents, though, was Houston with a total of 22,188. This was followed by Charlotte with 21,818. Texas had three cities in the top 10 — Houston, Austin and Dallas.
To arrive at their conclusions, researchers analyzed some 2 million collisions that occurred between 2018 and 2019. They found a 6.8% increase in the number of accidents nationwide from 2018 to 2019. Strangely enough, those cities with the highest crash numbers saw a decrease in 2019. Charlotte, for instance, saw 13.3% fewer crashes that year.
The “hotspot” with the highest car crash rate, rather than number, was the Pelham Road Exit on Interstate 85 in Greenville, S.C. Two other stretches of highway in Greenville made the top 10 as well as an intersection in the South Carolina capital of Columbia.
Researchers hope that the data helps drivers, including those in the public transportation industry, to become more aware of certain hazardous locations. Conversely, this data lets people know what are the safest places to drive around in.
A number of factors may be contributing to the rise in auto accidents, but it all comes down to negligence. Drivers can become distracted behind the wheel, or they may choose to travel while drowsy or drunk. When negligent actions result in the injury of others, legal action may be warranted.
